How to Print Your Own Design on a Cushion (4 Methods Compared)

You’ve got the artwork. Now you need it on a cushion. There are four realistic ways to do that, and they are not interchangeable — each one suits a different design, quantity and budget. Here is how they actually compare.

Method 1: Dye-sublimation — the best all-round option

The ink is turned into gas under heat and bonds into the polyester fibres themselves. Nothing sits on top of the surface.

  • Hand-feel — indistinguishable from plain fabric. No film, no cracking, no peeling.
  • Detail — photographic, gradients and fine lettering all reproduce cleanly.
  • Durability — the print lasts as long as the fabric does.
  • Limitations — requires polyester-based fabric (polyester, peach skin, snow-nail fleece). Cotton will not hold dye-sublimation ink.

Method 2: Direct-to-garment printing — full colour, no setup

Water-based ink is sprayed onto the fabric and heat-set. No screens, so no setup fee and no minimum quantity.

  • Best for photographs and complex colour under about 50 pieces.
  • Works on cotton and cotton blends.
  • There is a slight surface feel to the print — less pronounced than screen printing, but present.

Method 3: Screen printing — the most accurate colour

Ink is pushed through a mesh stencil, one screen per colour. For solid areas and lettering it produces the most saturated, most accurate result available.

  • Excellent for logos, monograms and solid-colour artwork.
  • Each additional colour needs another screen, so setup cost scales with the number of colours.
  • Not suitable for gradients or photographic images.

Method 4: Embroidery — the highest perceived quality

Thread replaces ink. The result has a physical depth that printing cannot replicate, and it typically ages better than any printed surface.

  • Best for logos, monograms and premium positioning.
  • Highest cost per piece and the longest lead time, because thread artwork needs digitising and a stitch file.
  • Fine details and small text need converting to a simpler form — anything below roughly 5 mm will not hold together.

Preparing your artwork correctly

  • Send vector files — AI, EPS or PDF. Scalable, and no quality loss at any print size.
  • Convert text to outlines. Otherwise the print house has to guess at your font, and it will be wrong.
  • Add 3–5 mm bleed where artwork runs to the edge.
  • Use CMYK for print, or supply your brand’s Pantone reference. RGB colours shift noticeably on fabric.
  • Keep images above 150 dpi at final size. A 40 cm cushion needs roughly 1500 px on the long edge.
The one thing that catches people out: a digital proof shows you the layout, but not the colour. It cannot tell you how the ink sits into a textured weave. That is why we always recommend a physical sample before any run above 20 pieces.

Matching method to quantity

Under 10 pieces, screen-print setup dominates and direct-to-garment wins on cost. Between 10 and 50, dye-sublimation is usually the sweet spot. Above 50, screen printing starts to beat it. Above 300, screen printing plus custom woven labels gives the lowest total cost and the most professional finish.

What affects price

In descending order of impact: printing method, size, fabric, quantity, then packaging. Fabric weight matters more than most buyers expect — anything under 180 g/m² prints thin and wears out quickly.
