A printed cushion is a printed surface, and print reacts to heat, detergent and friction in ways plain fabric does not. Get the care wrong and you get cracking, bleeding or a print that fades to grey. Get it right and the cushion outlasts the sofa it sits on.
First, work out whether it is washable at all
- Removable cover with a zip — the best case. The cover washes, the insert does not need to.
- Fully washable, all-in-one — washable if the insert is polyester fibre fill. Never if it is memory foam or down.
- Non-washable — anything with memory foam, feather down, foil print, flocked velvet or a coating. Surface clean only.
Care by printing method
| Dye-sublimation | Machines. Cold water, 30 °C or below, gentle cycle, mild detergent. No bleach. No tumble drying — the heat will distort the insert and dull the print. |
| Direct-to-garment | Machines, cold water, inside out. Dry flat rather than in the dryer. Ink is water-based, so expect a very slight softening over time. |
| Screen printing | Usually hand or machine washable on cold. Never dry clean — solvent will lift the ink. Wash inside out to protect the print surface. |
| Embroidery | Very forgiving. Machine washable cold. The thread barely moves. This is one of the reasons embroidery is the premium choice. |
| Foil / metallic print | Never wash. The foil lifts and flakes. Wipe with a dry cloth only. |
Care by fabric
- Cotton and cotton-linen — machine washable cold, iron on the reverse if needed, shrink by up to 3% if untreated.
- Snow-nail fleece — hand wash only. Machine washing mats the pile and it never recovers. Dry flat and brush the nap with a soft brush.
- Plush velvet — do not machine wash. Use a soft brush along the nap or a lint roller. Keep out of direct sunlight and humid rooms.
- Printed polyester — the most forgiving. Machine washable cold, resilient to stains, dries fast.
The drying rule that matters most
Dry flat, at room temperature, away from direct sun. This applies to almost everything. Tumble drying is the single most common cause of both print damage and insert shrinkage, and high heat will cause dye-sublimation colours to shift.
Dealing with stains
- Oil — absorb with paper towel first, then a little mild detergent worked in gently. Never use hot water; it sets grease.
- Coffee, tea, wine — rinse with cold water immediately from the wrong side, then treat with detergent. Hot water fixes stains permanently.
- Ink or pen — dab with a cotton swab and a little isopropyl alcohol, working from the outside inward so it does not spread.
- Generic advice — treat it within the first hour if you can. Dried stains are much harder to remove than fresh ones.
Keeping the shape
- Fluff and rotate the cushion every few weeks, especially if it sits in one corner.
- Do not overstuff a cover with a heavy insert — it strains the seams and the zip.
- Replace the insert, not the cover, when it flattens. Covers are the expensive part because of the print.
- Do not store cushions compressed for long periods. Memory foam and down will not recover.
Long-term appearance
Expect a high-quality print to look excellent for years. The most common long-term change is slight fading from UV exposure rather than wear. If the cushion sits in a sunlit room, rotate it periodically, or choose a darker fabric — darker grounds show fading less.
