A personalised cushion is one of the few gifts that stays visible in someone’s home for years. It ends up on a sofa, in a photograph, on a video call. That makes it a genuinely good gift — and also a fussy one to get right. Here is what works.
What to put on it
The rule is simple: make it specific to one person. “Home Sweet Home” is a poster. “Happy 30th, Sam — the trip where you lost the shoes” is a keepsake. The difference in emotional impact is enormous, and the cost difference is zero.
- A date — a first meeting, a wedding date, a birthday. Always works, never fails.
- A place — the coordinates, a city, a hand-drawn map.
- A photo — family, a pet, a group. The single most requested design.
- A phrase only they would understand — an inside joke, a line from a letter, a song lyric.
- A name or initial — monogrammed, embroidered, simple and classy.
By occasion
| Birthday | Age in large numerals, or a photo with a birth date. 40–45 cm, budget-conscious. |
| Wedding | Both names and the date, or the venue coordinates. Two-sided works well here. |
| Housewarming | The new address, a hand-drawn floor plan, or the skyline of the new city. |
| New baby | Name and birth date, stars chart, or a family illustration. Check for no small loose parts. |
| Memorial | A photograph with dates, a meaningful word, or handwriting. Add a printed card explaining the story. |
| Graduation | Class photo, year, school name or crest — and check the licensing on any crest you use. |
Budget bands
- Under $10 — 40 cm, direct-to-garment print, simple design, polybag. Fine for colleagues and bulk favours.
- $10–25 — 45 cm, dye-sublimation or screen print, drawstring or box. The sweet spot for friends and family.
- $25–50 — snow-nail fleece or velvet, woven label, gift box with a card. Right for partners and parents.
- $50+ — embroidery, full gift presentation, handwritten card. For people who are genuinely hard to buy for.
Artwork rules for gifts
- One focal point. A face, a date, a word. Not a collage.
- Dark ground, light ink — reads better on fabric than the reverse.
- Print at least 15 cm tall for the main element, or it disappears at normal viewing distance.
- Keep the margins generous. Design that runs to the edge looks cheap on a cushion.
Two-sided is the secret weapon for gifts
One side for the photo, one side for the words. It doubles the personalisation without doubling the physical size, and it means the cushion is worth turning over.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a size that does not fit — ask how big their cushions are, or send 40 cm which works almost everywhere.
- Using an image you do not have the right to use — celebrity photos and TV characters are the most common mistake, and they are genuinely infringing.
- Forgetting the card — a printed cushion with no explanation is confusing; the same cushion with one line of context is moving.
Add something by hand
A printed cushion is machine-made. A handwritten card makes it a gift. Even one line in a decent pen changes the whole thing, and it costs nothing.
