Match the seat depth
The rule of thumb: the cushion should be slightly shallower than the sofa’s seat depth, so a seated person’s shoulders relax rather than being pushed forward.
- Seat depth under 55 cm → cushions up to 45 cm.
- Seat depth 55–70 cm → 50–60 cm.
- Seat depth over 70 cm (deep lounge seating) → 60 cm and above.
The proportion formula
The total width of your cushion group should sit at roughly two-thirds of the sofa width. Large cushions at the outside, smaller ones in front and centre. Two-thirds of a 2.2 m three-seater is about 150 cm — typically one 60 cm plus two 45 cm.
As a general count: two-seat sofas take two to three cushions, three-seat sofas three to five. More than six on one sofa stops reading as styling and starts reading as storage.
Thickness matters as much as width
- 10–12 cm — soft, huggable, decorative.
- 14–16 cm — firm, sculptural, holds a printed design upright.
- For artwork to read well, we recommend thickness at roughly one quarter of the width or more.
Measure before you order
Measure the sofa, not the listing photo. Product photos are shot with different furniture and lighting, and the proportions in them are not reliable. Ten seconds with a tape measure removes all guesswork.
